NORTHEAST TOBAGO CLIMATE CHANGE CHAMPIONS
Since early 2016 ERIC has participated in the “Action by Civil Society in Trinidad and Tobago to Build Resilience to Climate Change” project, implemented by CANARI in collaboration with Conservation International and with support from BHP Billiton Trinidad and Tobago. Following a series of workshops aimed at developing climate change communication, vulnerability assessments and resilience building, we are now implementing our climate change project:
Developing awareness of climate change in northeast Tobago through the establishment of a network of community climate change champions, and a coral reef climate change awareness tour.
Our project aims to identify and work with a number of community members throughout northeast Tobago to develop their understanding of climate change and capacity to act as sources and disseminators of climate change information and knowledge to their community peers. Through workshops, vulnerability assessments, community meetings, and the development of a coral reef and climate change awareness snorkel tour that will be available to the public from November, our network of climate change champions will seek to build environmental and social climate change resilience in northeast Tobago, and engage their communities in a proactive approach to this global threat.

THE NATIONAL ENERGY GLOBE AWARD FOR TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO
UNDER THE PATRONAGE OF UNESCO
In June 2017 the North East Tobago Climate Change Champions Network was chosen as the best project in Trinidad and Tobago and was honoured with the National Energy Globe Award for Trinidad and Tobago, one of today’s most prestigious international environmental awards.
The goal of the award is to present successful sustainable projects to a wider audience, since a number of the environmental challenges faced today are already being addressed by good, feasible solutions that are under-recognised or simply not known outside of their operational areas. The award is open to projects that either conserve and protect natural resources or employ renewable energy.
The North East Tobago Climate Change Champions Network project was funded in 2016 by BHP Billiton through Conservation International, and implemented with the assistance of the Caribbean Natural Resources Institute.
The Board and staff of ERIC would like to express their thanks to the funders, and respect and gratitude for the commitment and passion of The Climate Change Champions.
The North East Tobago Climate Change Champions Network will be continued through 2017 - 2019 with the support of BHP Billiton Trinidad and Tobago.
